Early Season Bass on the Fly

It’s that time of year again, March is in full swing and whether your home lake is open water or still cloacked in a wintery sheet of ice the urge to get your hands on that first Bass of the season is constantly in your head. For those of us further south, it’s not so bad, but I remember all to well the feeling of looking at a body of water covered in ice too thin for ice fishing, just waiting for a good wind storm and warm snap to blow thru and open up the lake.

New School Bass: Stripers on the Fly TBT

One thing about the East Coast that I’m excited for is Striper Fishing. Rhode Island is home to one of the countries best Striper fisheries and you better believe we will be taking full advantage of in. In the mean time, check out this throw back from the worm hatch on Salt Pond in 2013 featuring captain Zach Lapp of Ripline Charters and myself. Enjoy and stay tuned for more Striper action this Summer.

New School Bass: Rainy Day Blues

Last weekend, I hit the lake with the homie Evan (@bassfactory101) to start filming New School Bass Season II. The morning started off cold and wet, but we were stoked to be on the water. At first there was a light breeze and a heavy mist. You know, the type of rain that every time you think it’s done and take off your jacket, it starts raining again. The breeze was a little cool but nice in the way that when the breaks in rain came, everything would dry off quick. As we made our way down the shoreline, we picked apart the weeds, grass, and rocks that we came across. From there on out, we threw everything we had at them.

Where Should We Fish?

As I mentioned a few weeks back in “Looking Ahead to 2019” I will be doing some traveling this year. I will be fishing in Southern California until April, then I will be driving across the country to Rhode Island for the Summer. Traveling across the country presents many opportunities to fish, film and meet new people. I want to make NSB Season 2 as epic as possible, so this is where I need your help. We want your input on where we should fish in 2019! Feel free to sound off in the comments section below or shoot us an email at newschoolbass@gmail.com. Cheers!

Throwback Thursday

Recently, I was digging through some old hard drives and found this video we made 6 years ago. The video highlights some beautiful moments fly fishing with friends on my home lake in Rhode Island. While this video is older, in 2019 we will be filming more of the NSB series on the east coast. While the bass may not be as big as what California has to offer, the fishing is great and I hope you guys will enjoy the content. For now, enjoy this piece of NSB history from years past.

Choosing the Right Baitcaster for Bass

As someone who compulsively absorbs any information I can find about bass fishing, it’s only natural I have acquired a decent amount of knowledge about the industry behind the sport.  The deeper I get into this industry, the larger it seems to become and the more fascinated I become with it.  I’ve probably fished thousands of different products from hundreds of different companies, and the incredible part is that I’m not a pro angler or even one with a disposable income to spend on gear.  Lures of all different shapes and styles, hooks for every imaginable application, line made with space-age materials, rods that are so light you can only feel their weight in the guilt from their price, and the reels—oh my, how I love the reels.

Five Ways to Get Your Bass Fix When the Temp Drops

There’s a very odd and certainly unpleasant feeling that comes with having something you desire be in sight but just barely out of reach.  No, I’m not talking about a promotion, a new car, or a vacation that you just can’t quite afford. If you’re a real bass fisherman, this means so much more than that.  I’m talking about those perfect green or brown specimens that lurk in lakes, rivers, and reservoirs across the country, ambushing preyfish, smashing lures, and ultimately capturing the hearts of millions of people who pursue them.  I’ve been utterly obsessed with bass and bass fishing for over a decade, and the deeper I get into it the more I fall in love with these tough, stocky fish and the thousands of different ways to catch them. However, where I’m from, they are all but out of reach for four, five, or sometimes even six months of the year.  A solid sheet of ice and water temperatures that dip into the lower 30s drop bass metabolisms significantly, and they become as elusive and difficult to catch as they can be.

New School Bass VI: Football Season

The last Two weeks, my time on the water has been limited. At first I was too busy to really notice, but after a week of no fishing, I was starting to get a little antsy. By Wednesday of week Two, I was getting texts from my good friend and fishing buddy Evan (@bassfactory101), saying the lake was on fire. He was out there catching multiple limits, 20-30 fish a day and I was stuck watching him slay from Instagram. By Friday, I couldn’t take it anymore. I cut my work week short and met him at the lake around noon.
